About Us

The Auld Shebeen Gastro Bar is situated on the banks of the Canal in Athy, Co. Kildare and on the towpath of the planned Blueway.

Purchased in 2019 by locals Daniel & Edwina Curtis, following extensive construction, redesign, and refurbishment the doors to a 150-seater bar, lounge, outdoor terrace, rooftop bar, private dining area opened in July 2020. The pub has a traditional personality with stylish décor to give the perfect relaxed surroundings. The newly designed Canalside B&B will open its doors June 2021.

We are a live music venue every Friday and Saturday night to the best Traditional Irish/Ballad groups including some of the best local musicians. While the act is live on stage in the Bar the music can be enjoyed in all areas of the pub on our widescreen HD TV’s & via our state-of-the-art surround sound.

Food is served daily. Like the pub’s interior, the menu has notes of traditional and edgy dishes suitable for all tastes. We have delicious seasonal vegan, vegetarian and gluten free dishes on our menu, alongside a tasty Healthy Option Menu. Our Chef’s source many local produces with the highest quality of ingredient used in all dishes. Our homemade stone baked pizzas are not to be missed and have become a firm favourite with customers.

Sample our extensive range of draught beers and premium beers including local Kildare craft beer “Soldiers Island”. The Auld Shebeen Gastro Bar offers Prosecco and wine on tap or maybe you would prefer to share a bottle of bubbles or wine from our diverse wine list with something for all palettes. Our Cocktail Menu has a mix of traditional & seasonal cocktails.

We are family focused at The Auld Shebeen Gastro Bar as family is very important to us, children are welcome on the premises till 9pm, we have a tasty kid’s menu with lots of choice, highchairs, modern baby changing facility.

Our bar, lounge & outdoor terrace areas are fully wheelchair accessible. We have a wheelchair accessible toilet.

We are 50 minutes from Dublin, 40 minutes from Kilkenny, 20 minutes from Kildare Village and 25 minutes from Newbridge Silverware. 3-minute walk to the town centre where you can see Ernst Shakleton statue a great opportunity for a selfie, why not visit the Athy Heritage Centre which is home to the Ernst Shakleton Exhibit. Just a 5-minute drive to Athy Golf Club or 10-minute to Kilkea Golf Club. If walking in the great outdoors is your passion, we are less than an hour drive to Glendalough, with many stunning woodland and bog land walks close by ready to enjoy. Our location is just perfect if you are looking to explore any part of Ireland’s Ancient East with Carlow, Laois, Kilkenny, Dublin, Wicklow all less than 1 hours drive from our door.

We are a designated Cycle Café with all the modern facilities a cyclist will appreciate while savouring the stunning views of the Blueway. We have a bicycle port and full bicycle repair kit onsite.
